The Scrabble game board consists of a 15 X 15 board and 100 tiles with letters on them. Well, 98 tiles have letters on them, two are blanks. To play each player must make a word out of the letter tiles they have. They must also use an existing letter on the board to form their new word.
To see who will go first each person picks one tile. The player who draws a letter closest in the alphabet to A is first.
Each person must draw seven tiles to begin the game. You have to make a word...one that is in the English Dictionary...with each play. If you are the first to go your word must be formed using the center tile on the board. It usually has a star on it. When you have made your word replace the amount of tiles you used by picking the same amount from the tile or bag of tiles. If you used 5 tiles get 5 more.
Each player takes a turn. You can choose to skip a letter making turn and replace all your tiles if you like.
The game continues until all the tiles have been used. Each tile has a point value and certain squares on the board can increase the value of the letter tiles or of the entire word. Colors designate the point value red squares are triple word value, pink squares are double word value, aqua squares are double letter value and dark blue are triple letter value. Of course my favorites are the red and the dark blue. You can really increase the point value of your letters and words using these colored tiles. You can only use each of these color tiles once...when one is covered by a letter tile it is now out of play. When a player forms a word he goes into the letter pile or bag and picks tiles until he has a total of 7 in his tray.
The game has 100 tiles. 98 of them contain letters A through Z, and each is worth 1 to 10 points. The value of each letter depends on how scarce it is in common English words. Two tiles are blank and can be used as wild cards...they can be any letter you decide, but they have no point value. If you can make a 7 letter word you get an extra 50 points. That word is called a "Bingo" or a "Scrabble".
What's the point of the game? To score the most points and the game is over when all the tiles have been used. This game is a great way to encourage children to learn. It's fun, competitive and interesting. Get your own Scrabble game today!
